Understanding Tauranga Orthopaedic Research Surveys

Introduction

These surveys are crucial in monitoring individual patient progress and enhancing the quality of orthopedic care. Using three internationally recognized and scientifically validated questionnaires, Tauranga Orthopaedic Research aims to track the effectiveness of surgeries and improve patient outcomes. Participation in these surveys provides invaluable data that helps in refining surgical techniques and patient care.

These questionnaires are used to monitor individual patient progress before and after surgery.

The Oxford Score

In detail, the Oxford questionnaire is an “operation-specific” outcome measure. This is designed to measure your progress before and after the surgery.

The WOMAC Score

The WOMAC score is a “disease-specific” score.  This is to measure the effect of how the underlying condition limits your comfort and function before surgery and then hopefully how it has been improved after surgery.

The VR-12 Survey

The VR-12 survey, is a “whole of life” questionnaire. This measures your general wellbeing, in particular over the last four weeks and allows us to adjust for any other life events that might be impacting on the other two scores.

Tracking Joint Replacement Progress

For individual patients, the scores are used primarily to track progress before and after surgery. In the long term the scores can act as an early warning system. If a patients’ score
significantly deteriorates the surgeon will be notified.

Secondly, the scores are anonymously pooled with all patients undergoing joint replacement surgery in the Bay of Plenty region to help us learn more about how well we are doing currently with our surgery and how we may improve this going into the future.

How to Complete the Surveys

Patients can complete these surveys through various methods. They can be completed online if an email address is provided or via paper forms sent in the post.
